ISLA Rooms
Rooms on Campus with ISLA (Inclusive Synchronous Learning Activities)
These hybrid teaching spaces allow for live teaching simultaneously to students who are situated both on campus and online.
Hybrid teaching at City St. George's, University of London, is known as ISLA (Inclusive Synchronous Learning Activities). It is a pedagogic and technical method for live teaching simultaneously to students who are both in the room and online. Academic staff can present to their class face-to-face and by using Microsoft Teams or Zoom to broadcast to their online audience. There are two cameras in each space, as well as microphones that pick up all speech in the room for those online.

ISLA rooms are primarily intended to enable interaction between students and lecturers and so are best suited for smaller class groups. This technology includes a large display screen for the Teams [or Zoom] gallery view and interface, with a second camera directed at in-class students for the benefit of those online, with ceiling microphones installed in each space to pick up in-class discussions.
