Student Skills for Learning
LEaD offers study skills advice to all City students via our dedicated student facing teams. They also liaise with academic staff to offer advice, guidance and some in-course study skills teaching.
Academic Skills
The Academic Skills Team works with students and staff in a collaborative, welcoming and inclusive way to provide guidance and encourage effective, independent and life-long learning.
We help students to develop their academic skills in four ways:
- We offer bookable 1-1 tuition in confidential 50-minute sessions, both online and in-person
- We run biannual Academic Skills webinars open to all students
- Our moodle course provides self-study resources for students before they arrive at City and for those currently studying here
- We work with staff to develop sessions and resources to support students within their courses, from video resources on group work to workshops focusing on critical thinking in the context of a particular assignment. You can submit a request for support here: Request for in-course study skills teaching.
Please email skills@city.ac.uk if you have any questions.
Student Digital Skills
The Student Digital Skills Team supports students to effectively use digital technologies for learning and employability.
We provide induction Moodle & LinkedIn learning workshops, one-to-one tutorials and bespoke workshops for modules.
- Students can book a one-to-one digital skills support tutorial with us where we can support them with a range of digital skills such as, using Moodle, finding student guidance or using a new piece of software.
- We manage LinkedIn learning for students and have a Student Digital Community on Teams where we regularly post relevant LinkedIn learning courses and Student Ed Tech guides to show students how to use City’s systems and platforms.
- Students can complete our Digital skills self-assessment tool which asks them questions about the specific skills they require whilst at City and will email them with a tailored list of support in relation to their answers.
Any staff who would like a bespoke digital skills or LinkedIn learning session for their module can contact our Digital Literacies Coordinator - Lauren.Regan@city.ac.uk
English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is academic writing and English language support for international students and for students whose first language is not English.
Students can take courses in academic writing and English language in autumn or spring term. One-to-one tutorials can be booked throughout the year.
These courses and one-to-one meetings are available both in-person and online. All courses are free and not assessed.
Contact Simon Cuddihy, the EAP Coordinator, if you would like further information about what’s available for your students or if you have a suggestion or request.
Students can find information about the service and sign up for courses through the Student Hub:
